About this deal

Human hair was challenging for many of the upright vacuums we tested, no matter the flooring type. If your home is populated by short-haired inhabitants, this will not be a concern for you. If your home is like mine, however, and inhabited by long-haired humans and animals alike, this may be more important. With regards to brushroll tangling, the v6 wasn't the best, but it certainly wasn't the worst. Fortunately, I found it easy to access the brushroll and to pull the hair from around it. You won’t be left wanting for cleaning tools with the V6 Absolute, either. The main floorhead, to be used on the funky metallic pinky-purple coloured extension tube, is Dyson’s direct-drive turbobrush head. While Dyson suggests the direct-drive head is great for both carpets and had floors, the dedicated hard floor tool supplied with the Absolute is our weapon of choice for tiles, parquet and laminates. The motor is housed inside the brush-bar for belt-free drive and the bar itself can be removed with two coin-turn clips for tool-free cleaning. Generally speaking, the higher the wattage, the greater the suction. The v6's standard mode air watts are the same as the previous model, the DC44 Animal. The DC59's boosted mode is, however, a significant improvement upon the DC44's boosted 65 air watts. For comparison, the Dyson Ball Compact Animal claims 128 air watts.

Long-pile carpets could be an issue, though, although using the boost mode for especially shaggy rugs may solve this. Beware of the impact of the super-power boost mode on the battery life though, as it's been noted that constant use can take it down to just six minutes. It's also worth remembering that having multiple accessories can be more of a hindrance than a help, especially when storing them, which is another reason not to splash out on a model with expensive extras unless you're sure you need them. Handheld Vacuums – these are powerful vacuums but light as well cord-free to clean anywhere from the home to the car.

On its default mode, you can, according to Dyson, get 20 minutes of cleaning out of the Dyson V6 Animal, about half of that claimed by competitor cordless vacuum the Gtech Air Ram. In standard mode using the direct-drive turbohead, the Absolute gave us nearly 16 minutes of cleaning time. With our standard-sized, upright vacuums, I thought that the hard floor tests, while important for our review, were somewhat unrealistic in terms of practical, real-life application. After all, for cereal spills, you'd likely use your broom and dustpan before going to the trouble of pulling out and plugging in the vacuum cleaner. I think that the v6 would be perfect for spot cleaning in the kitchen or on any of your other hard surfaces. Given it's performance with fine debris, it would also be an excellent answer for dusty baseboards or crumbs under the cabinet. Purifiers - Dyson purifiers capture 99.95% of potentially harmful pollutants, and keep them trapped. Now that doesn’t sound a lot but, without wishing to blow smoke up Dyson’s crevice nozzle, when a cordless cleaner delivers this much suction you don’t need a lot of time. Moreover the trigger switch mechanism means you won’t have it running when moving from area to area or moving furniture to clean behind, so its run time is all genuine cleaning time.

It's handy to know that the hoover only weighs 2.3kg, so its manoeuvrability is pretty nifty. With a capacity of 0.4L, it doesn’t hold an awful lot of dirt but with the press of a button you can empty the dust into the bin - for most people this isn’t a problem but those with pets and young children may find themselves emptying it frequently - so decide whether that will be an inconvenience. It’s not just about performance though, as V8 models are more expensive – and the V6 isn’t cheap in the first place! For this reason, choose the V6 if you want a vacuum for daily cleaning and would prefer a lower price rather than a longer run-time. If you want to use a cordless vacuum for cleaning an entire home, however, then the V8’s 40-minute run-time is the better choice. For even smaller detail cleaning jobs, a combined standard nozzle/dusting brush and long crevice tool are supplied too. All of the tools can be used on the handheld unit or on the extension tube and, as we have come to expect from Dyson, everything clips together easily. In my testing of the v6, I found it to be incredibly manoeuvrable. This is due in part to its light weight, but also because of a pivoting ball on the cleaner head reminiscent of the full-size Dyson ball technology. As the bulk of the weight rests in your hand, the v6 is easy to push forward when using the extension wand but you'll have no trouble using it with attachments either. While the distribution of the appliance's weight has something to do with this, the triggered power certainly doesn't hurt. Its responsiveness makes you feel completely in control, enabling you to vacuum where you need to without draining the battery more than necessary.

Fans – Dyson fans have no blade and choppy air, they are also safe, easy to clean, features a sleep timer and comes with a remote control. While it didn't necessarily excel with large debris like the Cheerios when the wand and floor cleaning head were attached, I had no trouble sweeping them up when I attached the combination tool, making the v6 function more like the dust busters of old.
