The fight-or-flight, which many of us have heard of, fight-flight-or-freeze, takes over and our body gets ready to respond to this danger or threat. Though it’s true that many religions and spiritual practices use forms of meditation and breathing techniques, Christian breath prayers are different.
Anxiety doesn’t have to be something that separates us from God but it can draw us closer to him if we use it as an opportunity. I want to invite you to find a young woman or a girl in your life, maybe it’s your friend’s daughter or your niece and pour into her because she would be so blessed by your presence and the wisdom that you have to share. But many times, because of the fall, our brains aren’t always connected the way God originally intended, and our bodies don’t always process stimuli as we’re supposed to. During breath prayer, we can imagine that we are breathing in God’s love with each indrawn breath, and we can picture ourselves releasing our cares and worries into God’s presence each time we breathe out. But as someone who has not been directly exposed to those practices in my local church, I appreciate the modeling and examples she gives. Now, they might not see the spiritual relevance for certain, but science has shown that deep breathing, even for a moment, is not only relaxing, but it affects our heart, brain, digestion and immune systems. But I wonder if in those moments, like when we slow down, and we breathe, and we pray if, that’s a way for us to just tap into the Holy Spirit that’s already inside of us, and we forget.
