About this deal

My life takes a dramatic twist when Mrs Pembrokes dies and with Charles away for many years, I am now relegated to the ranks of faceless housemaids. No more worthy of notice than the umbrella stand in the hall. That is until I am faced with the “… dark-eyed woman”, my mystical godmother. Although offering me the stuff of dreams, I was to be lured by this dark, unnerving, and chilling woman into making an agreement that would cost me my soul. First off... DISCLAIMER:I beta-read this book. Also, Titan Books provided me with an evaluation ecopy via NetGalley (thank you!). Neither facts influenced my review in any way. In the Eight Kingdoms, none have greater strength or influence than the asha, who hold elemental magic. But only a bone witch has the power to raise the dead. Tea has used this dark magic to breathe life into those she has loved and lost...and those who would join her army against the deceitful royals. But Tea's quest to conjure a shadowglass, to achieve immortality for the one person she loves most in the world, threatens to consume her. This plot was so t

I enjoyed anticipating how Eleanor’s wishes would be granted and seeing how she would react when she was given what she asked for, especially when expectation and reality didn’t line up. I disliked the main character, a lot. I found nothing sympathetic at all despite what the author expressed to us. Her mother worked for a woman and she and the woman became friends. Our main character was born, and when she was young her mother died. Her mother's mistress raised her like a daughter, and then the she died. She was made into a servant in the house. She wants to live that life again. Mainly because her adoptive 'guardian' remarried? or was married? to a man who is disgusting and rapes his maids. One night, among her beloved books of far-off lands, Ella’s wishes are answered. At the stroke of midnight, a fairy godmother makes her an offer that will change her life: seven wishes, hers to make as she pleases. But each wish comes at a price and Ella must to decide whether it’s one she’s willing to pay it. The nitty-gritty: An ode to fandoms and the nostalgia of 1980s fantasy films, The Shadow Glass drips with magic, humor, perfect pacing and thrilling adventure. The author John Winning is a frequent contributor to SFX magazine; honestly this fact explains a lot about the content and style of the book. It has a very Hollywood fantasy feel to it- to the extent that I had to keep reminding myself that it was meant to be set in England (at book club, someone was sure it was America) as something about the setting just didn’t ring true- this is more surprising from an actually British writer. It’s also stuffed full of crowd-pleasing tropes (although few of them are executed well): the lovable little fluffy creature that turns out to be a giant monster; the reclusive and emotionally distant father figure, tied to themes of legacy and artistic creation; the lovable nerd crew; saving the land with the power of imagination; a misguided human who sides with the baddies… All of these elements are present, but none of them seem to be used to say anything new or interesting, and in some cases (as previously mentioned), their presence is at odds with the rest of the book itself.History will show that I was orphaned by the sweet age of 9 and became a ward of the Pembroke family at Granborough House. Mrs Pembroke was a wonderful second mother, who bestowed on me the love and privileges of any caring and wealthy family. Charles her son became my soulmate, but I did not know what that meant then. Oh boy, I do not want to write this review. It's always hard when you expected to love a book and then...you really, really don't. Struggling to adapt, constantly under the watchful eye of the house keeper or the leering gaze of Mr Pembrokeshire, Ella long for escape. She frequently goes into the library at night to escape.

Epic, edge-of-your-seat fantasy in its own right, with just enough horror to keep things interesting. The world-building is fantastic, but it's the beautifully drawn characters that I think will capture readers' hearts, as they force us to think about growing up, growing old, and the importance of hanging on to that sense of wonder that the best fantasy (like The Shadow Glass itself) can inspire.' Like I said, a great concept. I liked seeing Ella fight with her conscience over whether to make another wish or not.

I loved this book with its explosion of imagination and insight into human nature. A rare combination. It worked with so many messages that are relevant in everyday life. In particular, what we do with the gifts or opportunities we are presented with in life, as we are constantly reminded that what we want or ask for may not be the thing we really need. This wasn’t about using nostalgia as a shield, it was about celebrating the things that defined them, the characters that spoke to their heart’s truth, the things that made them different and unique and powerful in their own special way. It united them.”
