About this deal

A honeyed Moscato withlily of the valley, white peach, nectarine, and dried apricots. Sweet but not syrupy despite the high sugar content. Terrific with honeyed desserts. Instantly defined and distinctive, with bold orchard fruits, and lots of tang and lemony zip. But there is subtle minerality here too, playing against the sweetness of the wine and the fruit. Lovely length and definition. 89 A sparkling wine of Prosecco and Moscato. The Moscato aromatics are matched with softly leafy character. The palate is off-dry, with good fruit and a fine, racy acidity. 88/100

Pale green. Crisp lemony nose, very clean. The palate has a little touch of sweetness, with a fresh, pithy lemon acidity that leaves it dry and moreish. 86 The 2022 competition was judged on 26 April at 28-50 Chelsea, employing experienced judges. The top wines were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their result, and those expressions that stood out as being outstanding in their field received the ultimate accolade – the title of Prosecco Master. This report features the medal winners only. Then there was further variation with source area, with, in particular, the Proseccos from all the DOCGs proving especially fine. Among these, it was the samples from the smaller area of Asolo that stood out for their powerful aromatics and ripe yellow fruit flavours, compensating for the fact that these wines tend to be a bit drier than their equivalents from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. What: This light and quaffable rose Prosecco is predictably excellent (La Gioiosa is one of the more reliable names in Prosecco). Fresh, dry and zesty with some raspberry and recurrant, this is an easy-drinking floral fizz that goes well with food but is also suitably special for a celebration. The bottle makes a lovely gift too.

Brut (up to 15g/l)

What: Not only is Morrisons Prosecco tasty and affordable, it’s also suitable for vegans – bonus! Made with grapes sourced from the best area in Italy, Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Morrisons The Best Valdobbiadene delivers intense flavours of fresh green apple and pear and overtones of apple blossom. We won’t go on, as we know you’re eager to get to our list of the best Prosecco brands to try right now, but we did just want to share a few facts about Prosecco that we learned during our testing. The most interesting of those (we think) is that ‘extra dry’ is not the driest Prosecco. ‘Brut’ Prosecco is, in fact, the driest while ‘dry’ actually describes fairly sweet Prosecco.

Around 7 – 8% Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco in the blend. Quite a Champagne-like nose with gentle nettle and herbal notes and a touch of yeawtiness. The palate has a cool, mineral character, with a little salty note. Lovely fruit here; lots of crisp orchard fruits and a long fiinsih with a bit of structure. 89/100 Instantly defined and distinctive, with bold orchard fruits, and lots of tang and lemony zip. But there is subtle minerality here too, playing against the sweetness of the wine, the fruit and a lemony twist. Lovely length and definition. 90/100

Notes on six Masottina sparklers are below. Only three are imported, but I’ve included them all to show what Prosecco in the right hands can do. These notes accompany our in-depth feature on Prosecco. For profiles of all of these estates please see Regional report: Prosecco, icing sugar and lemons. What: It might be the cheapest prosecco on this list, but that’s definitely not to say it’s the least tasty. With undertones of pear, citrus and lychee, this Lidl Prosecco provides an elegantly-balanced sip that’s ideal for getting a party started. It also pairs well with cicchetti (but then, very few Proseccos don’t). But Prosecco can be characterful. The grape, known these days asGlera, has a faintmusky-floral personality that tops itscitrus and stone fruit essence with shades of snappy bitterness. When grown in the heart of the Treviso hills, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the wine canearn DOCG status, and these wines, especially the vineyard bottlings, can be both expressive and elegant. The Adami Extra Dry has aspumy mousse with flavors of peach, ripepear, and yellow apple. Grassy herbs and yellow citrus pith add bite.

This Masottina Prosecco is a DOC Prosecco. The difference is that a DOCG Prosecco has been approved by a tasting panel, and therefore the wine is guaranteed to taste as it should. Does this really matter and is it a good barometer of quality? Not really in my opinion, but it can be used lightly. The Masottina Prosecco may only be a DOC but it’s drinking right alongside, if not better than its Kirkland counterpart. Harvest underway in Contrada Granda NV Masottina Brut Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Col fondo wines contain leesy sediment, which makes the body cloudy and very savory. This one’s quiet, with stony aromatics that complement toasty biscuit and brioche, almondand almond extract, and suggestions of forest honey and hazelnuts. We reveal the medal-winning brands from this year’s Prosecco Masters, which comprised all styles and quality levels of this popular Italian fizz, and saw both Extra Brut and Extra Dry samples gain top scores, along with a couple of rosés too. These simpler styles of Prosecco wines indicate that, while the overall level of quality is good, not all Proseccos are created equal, so a level of attention in selection is required. Youthful age guarding the freshness is always relevant for these DOC wines. Most of these wines are produced in an Extra Dry style, with around 12g/l-17g/l residual sugar, which suits the peachy fruit flavour well. These are easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing wines, perfect for a spring day among the daffodils and cherry trees. Incrocio Manzoni is a cross of Pinot Bianco and Riesling. There’s a great deal of minerality to this wine, with hard, white fruit flavours. The palate has a lovely straw like character and quite a powerfully fruity mid palate, with good length. Delicious with mixed seafood. 88/100
