About this deal

It can help get kids outdoors and active, something many families struggle with especially in bad weather. Pick a familiar and safe location to start with, and ensure if they are venturing out alone that you know exactly where they are heading. Look for a basic model with limited features – a simple on/off switch and a small display should be enough without overcomplicating matters. It has a simple analogue display, with two adjustable dials – one to turn it on and off, and the other to change which metals are being detected.

Metal detecting can be a great hobby for the ‘technology-obsessed’ younger-generations to get involved with. He found that scanning the removed soil helped locate the find, but there was more mess and faff than necessary. With children growing all the time, this is a great feature to look out for to make sure the detector doesn’t suddenly become redundant! For children aged 4 – 9 years old, I recommend choosing a lightweight plastic metal detector with a weight of around 1kg .It has better coverage than traditional round coils, making it a good option around dense vegetation or rocks. The tones were helpful because it meant Max didn’t have to look at the screen so much, relying on the dings instead .

The ACE 200 has fewer modes than its big brothers, but they are (in my opinion anyway) the best ones of the bunch. Overall this is an easy machine to use to the point that my 10-year-old got the hang of it within 5-10 minutes. The only difference between the two is the 350 has the American coin denominations shown on the decal near the LED screen and the depth is in cm and not inches. My hands weren’t strong enough to push the washers in all the way so I needed some help and the cable tie was annoying.

However, the control box is not waterproof so I was careful about where I laid it down to dig and wouldn’t want to take it out in the rain. It can be used on different terrain, and doesn’t require the ground to be totally dry – the 17 cm coil is waterproof and can be used in shallow water like rivers and the sea shore. He is rather hoping Father Christmas will be forthcoming… I’m Just after a bit of advice as to weather or not you think it’s size would suite him reading your blog the weight sounds fine. To celebrate Garretts 55th anniversary we are offering Garrett complete anniversary metal detecting kits which include a metal detector, pinpoint probe, find box, headphones and more, perfect as a gift for someone or to start you off in the hobby. It also has a simple LCD display, which will create more interest for children, even though it’s mostly useful for displaying how much battery power is left rather than revealing anything useful about the location of any potential finds.

However, I won’t recommend this for kids; you can check out my kid’s metal detector reviews here to see the ones I recommended. Gold nuggets are the dream of course, but it’s unlikely you’ll find one with the ACE 200 as it’s a VLF machine not suited to ‘wild gold’ land. If you are looking for beginner's help, advice finds galleries, news and reviews then you are in the right place.I think that the ace 150 will be a great Xmas gift for your son, but, keep in mind that you should spend some time with him helping to assemble it. It’s a low cost, simple-to-use metal detector suitable for beginners and even mature kids, but it still has Garrett’s build quality and reliability. Be aware of the washers here– they have three small points that need pushing into the matching holes. The vibration function is particularly useful if the detector is being used in an area where the beeping can’t be heard, or where beeping would be disruptive to others.
