About this deal

AUO503D (D04YD_B140HAN) tested with X-Rite i1Pro Basic 2Maximum: 308.6cd/m² (Nits) Average: 294cd/m² Minimum: 13.22cd/m² I should note that I had to take the photo in front of the window, where I had natural light, because images taken at my desk were far darker. While the 8 th-generation Intel CPUs all tend to experience an initial short burst of performance before subsiding somewhat, the Intel Core i7 in our previous 7490 review unit still distances itself from the Core i5-8350U in our CPU tests—ahead by some 9% and 15% in the Cinebench R15 multi- and single-core tests, respectively. After the first few runs, average multi-core scores are closer to the 530 mark in our tests—again, below the less-consistent but still quite a bit higher (roughly) 570 we received over the long-term from the Core i7 model. Temperatures haven’t changed much since the Core i7 model, with load averages on top/bottom 35.2 °C and 37.5 °C, respectively (within a degree C of the previous measurements—though room temperatures were also a degree higher during today’s measurements, so it’s really closer to 1.5 °C or so of a drop). Idle values are actually higher, which might be an idiosyncrasy of firmware or something similar (because no other logical explanation suffices). Here, we recorded values of 28.7 °C and 32.5 °C, well above room temperatures. The maximum temperature on the upper side is 45.2 °C / 113 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.

Given the amount of gutter space to the left and right of the keyboard, maybe a wider design could have been employed. That said, the keyboard design works well enough for typing, even with large hands. Dell used an Intel 545s M.2 SATA drive in the review hardware, and on paper, it looks fine. But in some of our writing tests, it didn’t perform that well, and the IOPS it delivers don’t compare favorably with those you’d get from a Corsair or Western Digital. The 256GB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD in the Latitude 7490 duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 17 seconds, for a rate of 299.36 MBps. That's faster than the 277.5 MBps premium-notebook average, the 282.73 MBps from the MateBook X Pro (512GB NVMe PCIe SSD), the 267 MBps from the ThinkPad T480 (256GB NVMe PCIe SSD) and the 282.7 MBps from the EliteBook 1040 G4 (512GB PCIe NVMe TLC SSD). In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.7 °C / 84 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F. Another strong point is the AU Optronics 14-inch IPS panel that’s a decent brightness and has a healthy color gamut. It also doesn’t use pulse-width modulation (PWM) to adjust brightness, with the negative impact that can have on eyesight. Using a Datacolor Spyder5 calibrator, we analyzed the screen and found that it could display 99% of the sRGB gamut and 75% of AdobeRGB. Those are good numbers for a portable device, even if they’re not high enough for professional color work. Battery life In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 83% of all devices are better.

The CPU-related tasks all hit great numbers, and not far from what the Core i7-8550U-based machines are capable of. As they share an identical Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU, the results for anything graphical are almost the same.

The ports haven’t changed at all from the 7480 series, with triple USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-A ports and a single Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C. There is also an RJ-45 Ethernet port, Smart Card slot, microSD card and SIM card receptacles. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU in the Dell Latitude 7490 pushed it to an Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test score of 87,894, which beats the 83,013 average and the 84,917 from the EliteBook 1040 G4 (Intel Integrated Graphics 630). We saw higher scores of 116,359 from the MateBook X Pro (Nvidia MX150 with 2GB of memory) and 132,991 from the ThinkPad T480 (Intel HD Graphics 620). The Dell Latitude 7490's got the speed you need (and then some), a keyboard that's comfortable enough for writing all day long and a battery that supports a full 8-hour workday. If only the display were brighter and it managed heat better. The Latitude 7490 scored a high 14,458 on the Geekbench 4 general performance benchmark, which leaps over the 10,033 category average. We saw lower scores of 12,913 from the Huawei MateBook X Pro (Intel Core i7-8550U with 16GB of RAM), 12,047 from the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (Intel Core i5-8350U with 8GB of RAM) and 13,463 from the HP EliteBook 1040 G4 (Intel Core i7-7820HQ with 16GB of RAM).

This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms). Today’s Latitude 7490 retains the 1920x1080 resolution, but exchanges the embedded touch display of our previous unit with a conventional IPS, non-touch, matte panel. Subjectively, color seems vivid, contrast appears strong, and brightness is fairly good. Our measurements revealed an average brightness of 294 cd/m²—ever-so-slightly below that of the embedded touch model—and a very good contrast ratio of 1342:1. While the ThinkPad T480s and the EliteBook 840 G5 in our comparison table only achieve results slightly above these, the X1 Carbon absolutely blows them all away with an average brightness of 533 cd/m²—and the 840 G5 offers a superior FHD IPS display option with a mind-blowing 630 cd/m² result. While today’s screen is certainly nice enough, Dell should consider stepping up their options for the next model to stay in competition. The Latitude 7490 finished our HandBrake video transcoding test (converting a 4K video to 1080p) in 21 minutes and 35 seconds, which is only slightly shorter than the 22:11 category average. The MateBook X Pro (27:18) took longer, and the ThinkPad T480 (18:09) took less time. Ergonomically, this is one of the smaller machines in this category, if only by a few millimeters. There are smaller machines, like the Lenovo X1 Carbon, but this device is certainly very portable. Built with stunning resolution: The 14" FHD (1920x1080) display features an anti-glare embedded touch screen for reduced weight and remarkable viewing all day.Asus has the excellent ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA that can be found for a little more, but comes with a Core i7 class CPU, 16GB of RAM and double the storage of this review model.
