About this deal

Secrets don’t stay hidden forever, and when these secrets are revealed, their worlds collide in an epic manner. I look up from checking through my presentation pages and see Marilyn holding up a pack of three Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Bree, who has a hard time believing that her brother-in-law is a murderer, decides to begin investigating Erin’s death on her own when not looking after her sister’s two children, Luke and Kayla. Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man.

I have to say, though, that even though I am pretty strictly a romance reader, I didn’t miss it in this one. It reminded me of the cheesy thrillers on the Lifetime channel, where you expect Tori Spelling to be murdered or something.Heartbreaking, emotional, impossible to tear yourself away from and so utterly devastating in places, this book should win awards. Others are helping but she’s on the swim team and she knows the currents will be strong so she dives in to save the flailing child.

Ava’s words are quickly echoed by the others and then they’re tumbling into Jodie’s car, the tiny blond girl at the wheel, and I’m left behind at our open gate. In this book, the reader is introduced to Homicide Detective Bree Taggert who is with the Philadelphia police department. Our main perspectives are Lisa, a nervous single mother who does her best to blend in as she hides from a traumatic past; Ava, Lisa’s teenage daughter who is corresponding with a mysterious older man online; and Marilyn, Lisa’s colleague and close friend who has some secrets of her own. When Erin was killed, of course Justin was the prime suspect and Matt is determined to prove his innocence. As was the case with Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough’s previous bestseller, there’s a significant plot twist in Cross Her Heart, her new novel. Firstly I would mention that both these books fall more into the realm of psychological thrillers so not my normal fantasy reads. And I love books like that, where you think you have it figured out and then the author throws you for a loop.

by commentators, guest bloggers, reviewers, and interviewees are solely their own and do not reflect the opinions of Locus magazine or its staff. It’s something that somebody said to me a few years ago and its funny but it simply stuck in my mind for no particular reason other than it felt a bit chilling somehow. It’s good to be at work, under the bright strip lighting and with the uniformity of desks and red office chairs and smart clothing. He starts to make a plan… I do not want to go into the plot, because that would ruin the story for you, but it is the story of a mother (Lisa) and her daughter (Ava) and what happens to their lives when secrets come out.Pinborough weaves several different time periods and several different narrative voices to create layers of character and conflict, but the characters are types often found in psychological thrillers, and while their problems are often relatable, at least at first, they aren’t particularly engaging. That's a bummer you didn't like this one, but at least you've read some way better books since that have more than made up for it :) I'll skip for now! I’m not sure I can put my finger on exactly what went wrong here for me– I think it was just a bit of everything. But I so enjoyed “13 Minutes” I wanted to give her books another chance, in case “Behind Her Eyes” was a fluke. Her real name is Charlotte Nevill and as a child she was convicted of the brutal murder of her half-brother, Daniel.
