About this deal

Other fearless seafarers have also landed on the shores of Catan: the race to settle the island has begun! With Sintra, the track does not reset so a few unplaced pieces each round and you will have a significant negative hit at the final scoring. We played one four-player game where a player was forced to take 11 yellow tiles as the final move of a round, essentially eating a -15 point penalty at the end of the game. Thus, I was skeptical when I heard about Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, but it was foolish of me to doubt all-star designer Michael Kiesling. If the Pane Pieces were taken from a Factory then any remaining pieces on that Factory are moved to the centre of the table.

Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! Or do you pack your turns with many small-point scoring actions and hope to block your friends from their end game play? In Azul, if you take extra tiles that you cannot fit on your board, they break and go to waste which will lead to negative points each time you take them. There is something to say about a game that makes you forget just how simple the game really is, and it’s another thing for a game to constantly remind you of things you have to think about.

If you decide that it’s in your best interest to rest your Glazier and move it back to the left most Strip, then that will be your turn. Instead of only one color per row and being able to place anywhere, your choices become more limited in Sintra. Once all the Pane Pieces have been taken from the Factories and the centre of the table, then the round is complete and the Pane Piece from the round track for that round is placed in the Glass Tower.

When this is coupled with a clever scoring mechanic where completing a Pattern Strip scores that position and already completed positions to the right, then the value of completing those rightmost strips is considerable as they can be scored multiple times during a game. My family picked up Stained Glass of Sintra over the course of a single game, and were able to very quickly start making strategic decisions about play and screwing each other over in fun ways in our second and third games. The first time a column is completed, one of its tiles is moved to the lower section of the tableau, causing the column to be flipped to its other side.

So when you take glass from a factory or from the center, you take all of that specific color from that specific spot. Part of my newer review style is going to be assigning a letter grade to each game as if I were a teacher grading a paper. At the start of the game, players receive a game board with window designs and a series of circular factory tiles are placed in the middle of the table. Players can expect to discover new unique art and components in Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, including translucent window pane pieces, a tower to hold discarded glass panes, and double-sided player boards and window pane panels, in addition to many other beautiful components!
