These 14 stories, originally published between 1892 and 1967 are taken from the oeuvre of luminaries like Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle (The Lion's Mane), and G. Ny guess is, the book was probably checked out since the library had closed the day before and it hadn’t been updated until I tried to get it. The Man Who Hated Earthworms” by Edgar Wallace (Pamela’s pa) is awful, Garnett Radcliffe’s 1938 “Pit of Screams” was simply unreadable, and the rest forgettable. I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review si entirely based on my ownreading experience. It's a grim tale of how people caught in poverty and powerlessness are easy prey for religious charlatans.

SARAH: As it turns out, Hamlet's idea to cause a criminal to confess by using a play would have been reasonable to Shakespeare's audience. I wish I could find more of F Tennyson Jesse's stories featuring the unique detective Solange Fontaine. On foreign soil, “officially and legally” they cannot gather evidence, question witnesses, or make arrests.
