About this deal

These 14 stories, originally published between 1892 and 1967 are taken from the oeuvre of luminaries like Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle (The Lion's Mane), and G. Ny guess is, the book was probably checked out since the library had closed the day before and it hadn’t been updated until I tried to get it. The Man Who Hated Earthworms” by Edgar Wallace (Pamela’s pa) is awful, Garnett Radcliffe’s 1938 “Pit of Screams” was simply unreadable, and the rest forgettable. I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review si entirely based on my ownreading experience. It's a grim tale of how people caught in poverty and powerlessness are easy prey for religious charlatans.

Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.

The racehorse threatened with doping in Arthur Morrison’s “The Case of Janissary”; the lowly worms in Edgar Wallace’s “The Man Who Hated Earthworms,” featuring more summary justice administered by the “four just men”; and the vanished baby gorilla in Josephine Bell’s “Death in a Cage” are all victims, not perpetrators.As ever with these anthologies, part of the joy of reading them comes from the mix of authors included, ranging from the well-known (Arthur Conan Doyle, G. SARAH: As it turns out, Hamlet's idea to cause a criminal to confess by using a play would have been reasonable to Shakespeare's audience. I wish I could find more of F Tennyson Jesse's stories featuring the unique detective Solange Fontaine. On foreign soil, “officially and legally” they cannot gather evidence, question witnesses, or make arrests.
