About this deal

In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are " bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. [1] In the UK, the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The first use of the term steeplechase on an official racecard was in Ireland in the early 19th century. The 'official' first running of the Grand National, held annually at Aintree in England, took place in 1839 and was won by an Irish horse, Lottery. The "National", as it is known, was run over 4.5 miles (7.2km), but since 2013 is run over 4.3 miles (6.9km). Notably, the 'Liverpool Grand Steeplechase' (to give its original name) was actually initiated in 1836, although the three earliest runnings have been overlooked in many historical chronicles. Won this last year with any amount in hand. Less aggressive than usual and let down by his jumping when third behind Editeur Du Gite and Edwardstone in the Clarence House. Has to rebound here.

The Betfair Chase is the first Grade 1 race of the British jumps season and previous winners of the race include greats such as Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card. How to watch the Betfair Chase race in 2023 Start time gaps between categories are calculated by race organizers with the goal of giving faster categories a chance to catch the slower groups ahead near the end of the race, so multiple categories are together for the finish. Most chase races use the Zwift chase race kit so each category can be easily seen on course Lower-category riders on a whole have less endurance and poorer pacing than higher-category riders, so their pace will fall off near the end of the race while the higher category riders have more to give. Stablemate Echoes In Rain , who won the Grade 1 Mares Champion Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in April when last seen over jumps, County Hurdle runner-up Pied Piper , who was second on the Flat in the Cesarewitch when last seen, and Fils D'Oudairies complete the four-strong field, with two runners apiece for Mullins and Gordon Elliott. You’re an A rider 20km into a 40km race. The B group began 2 minutes before you, and that gap is now down to 1 minute. Your pace is spot on.

Horses trained in Ireland make up three-quarters of the field for this traditional closing event on the second day, a flat race for horses that will be jumping next year and one that has been won by a whole host of future stars over both hurdles and fences. It has not been won by a British-trained runner since 2016 and that trend is very likely to continue, with Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, who have taken all six renewal since, fielding 10 and four runners respectively. Fact To File, Fun Fun Fun and It’s For Me are the main Mullins contenders according to the betting, but the trainers 12 previous successes in this race include two winners at 25-1 and others at 16-1 and 14-1, so don’t dismiss the remainder out of hand.

The big race on day two of the Cheltenham Festival is the Grade 1 Queen Mother Champion Chase, the leading two-mile chase of the National Hunt season. Unlike point-to-points, licensed trainers as well as amateur trainers may have runners in Hunter Chases. This often causes controversy when big name trainers run former Grade 1 horses in Hunter Chases as amateur trainers feel they are unable to compete. New rules which took effect in 2009 will prevent horses which have finished in the first 3 of a Grade 1 or 2 chase in the previous season from taking part. are flat races for horses that have not yet competed either in flat racing or over obstacles, often called 'bumper' races. Once a horse has won a steeplechase, from the next season they will not be allowed to enter novice chases unless the win comes in the final two months of a season, in which case they can run novices until the end of October that year. With the introduction of sponsorship (starting with the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1957), a whole host of other important races have been added to the National Hunt racing season, although many of these are geared towards generating betting turnover in the form of competitive handicaps that attract large numbers of runners.

Cheltenham Special

What’s more, towards the end of October some horses will have gained plenty of chase experience and may even have won a few races the previous season, yet are still allowed to race in the novices. With so many bookmakers out there to choose from, punters can take advantage of some fantastic free bets and betting offers on the horse racing.

Don’t overlook John McConnell’s Encanto Bruno either. McConnell has yet to saddle a Festival winner from 18 attempts but he is 9-28 with his other runners at Cheltenham since October 2018 and has been kept fresh for this race since thumping Strong Leader – who was best of the British in yesterday’s Supreme – in a course-and-distance bumper in October. All National Hunt races are also classified in classes 1-7 (class 1 best). Graded and listed races are class 1. When betting on horse racing for the first time you’re likely to encounter a bewildering world of jargon.Read our guide to the best Cheltenham betting offers to claim Festival free bets When does the Queen Mother Champion Chase take place? This is a big plus with heavy ground expected on Saturday and there’s no doubt that Dan Skelton will have his charge ready for this. If he can replicate the form of his win here last year, he is very much the one to beat.
