About this deal

There are three removable shields surrounding the RAM and storage, two of which can be unscrewed with a similar screwdriver. Once those are off, you will see dual slots for M.2 SSDs on either side, and one already preinstalled (you can configure with two drives when you buy, or add more later). To access the RAM, you can just pull off the shielding with your fingertips. Battery Life on the Lenovo Legion 7

I used a Phillips head screwdriver to take out ten screws from the bottom cover of the laptop: four screws along the top, four screws at the bottom, and two screws on either side. I also needed a pry tool to fully unlatch the bottom panel from the rest of the laptop, but did just fine using an expired credit card instead. Lenovo has been a bit of a latecomer to the world of gaming laptops, and the Legion 7 is the firm’s attempt to gain ground against big players like Asus and Alienware. AMD’s processor is fine, but this is another component that’s starting to show its age. Its single- and multi-core Geekbench results of 1360 and 7141 are decent, and they’re good enough to handle multi-tasking and mainstream content-creation tasks. For Windows PCs, we run both synthetic and real-world gaming tests. The former includes two DirectX 12 gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark, Night Raid (more modest, suitable for systems with integrated graphics) and Time Spy (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs). Also looped into that group is the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which we use to gauge OpenGL performance. The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers. At first, I was surprised by how loud the speakers were. When I began listening to “Omar’s Coming” by Westside Gunn, I noticed how muffled the song was. Then, upon further inspection, I lifted the laptop and realized there were two smaller speakers underneath. Once I lifted it off the surface, Immediately heard the extra “oomph” they provided.

The wattage provided by the charger allows for peak gaming when powered on, but the battery life can be disappointing when unplugged, especially when gaming or doing other intensive tasks. But that's not to say unplugged longevity is bad for a gaming laptop. On our battery test, which involves streaming video, browsing the web, and running OpenGL tests over Wi-Fi, all with the display at 150 nits of brightness, the Legion 7 ran for 4 hours and 39 minutes.FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, anti-glare, 240Hz, < 1ms response time, 100% sRGB, 500 nits, VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified, Dolby Vision™-enabled.

Our final productivity test is Puget Systems' PugetBench for Photoshop, which uses the Creative Cloud version 22 of Adobe's famous image editor to rate a PC's performance for content creation and multimedia applications. It's an automated extension that executes a variety of general and GPU-accelerated Photoshop tasks ranging from opening, rotating, resizing, and saving an image to applying masks, gradient fills, and filters.

Unrivaled gaming performance at a price

Across all of our performance tests, this laptop achieved scores that put it well above almost every entry in our best gaming laptops list. In our 3DMark tests, the Legion 7 scored 52,201 in Night Raid, 23,811 in Fire Strike and 10,709 in Time Spy whereas the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (the device in our number one spot) only achieved 43,645, 21,211 and 9,333 in each test respectively. We’d expect nothing less than an astounding performance from the Lenovo Legion 7 laptop, and its AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 did not disappoint.

Portability isn’t a strong suit, but this mobile gaming PC is otherwise hard to fault. The Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 earns a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end, 16-inch gaming laptops as the Gen 6 model did before it. We’ve boosted our rating by half a star for now including a fingerprint reader, USB 4 ports, and a sharper 1080p webcam. If you’re wanting to shell out a little more, you can upgrade from our specs to versions of the Lenovo Legion 7 with up to 32GB of RAM, up to 2TB of SSD storage and an AMD Ryzen 9 5900H CPU. This performance comes at a few costs though, and we aren’t just talking about the ones your wallet will feel. Battery life The Legion’s keyboard is robust and crisp, with a fast typing action and a numberpad – it’s well built for gaming workloads. The Alienware has a slightly sharper typing action, but there’s little to choose between the two. You’ll only get something that feels significantly weightier if you buy a notebook with low-profile mechanical hardware or if you opt for the Asus and its 2mm of travel. But can it deliver the goods with real-time performance? After spending over a week with the laptop, here re my thoughts. Design and Keyboard READ NEXT: Maximise your potential with these top gaming mice Lenovo Legion 7 review: Design and build quality Our first test is UL's PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and office workflows to measure overall system performance and also includes a storage subtest for the primary drive. The Legion 7 Gen 7 finished in the upper end of the graph in the main test, though it didn’t catch the Legion 7i Gen 7. The crosshair in the Legion logo on the lid also glows with RGB lightning too, creating a cohesive glow that will be the envy of your PC gaming rivals. Aesthetically, Legion laptops hide their gaming light under a bushel. Turn the light show off and it could pass as just another powerful workstation laptop. It should appeal to those who want a notebook for serious work as well as serious play.
