About this deal

Now, go to WSJT-X and verify that signal levels coming in are being heard, and at a level that the software can use. This is shown by the audio level indicator at the bottom left of the screen. The audio level is indicated by a vertical bar. You want the signal at most to be at 80%, lowest around 30%. Adjust your computer microphone level (for the soundcard you are using) until you achieve the audio level needed. We will now work on your transmit audio level. First, we need the radio to display the ALC level during transmit. This is done by going to the Settings Mode, FUNCTION-2 screen, and selecting MTR (meter). You then select ALC from the available options. Exit the Settings Mode, and you will now see an “ALC” indicator below the frequency. During transmit, the meter will increase from the left towards a visual “bump” just above the signal indicator. If you are beyond the “bump”, you have too much audio signal.

This review will cover every negative of the FT-891 I have noticed, but keep in mind that I feel it's a decent value, and the most performance you're going to find at this price-point. Some will want to tear this radio apart, because it's not the second coming of the FT-857, or because some test lab stats aren't absolute perfection, but in my experience, this radio is cheap way to get some decent performance. I love the 7300, the screen is it's main feature, seeing the waterfall is nice but to be honest the DNR is so good on the 891 I'm half thinking of selling the 7300 for a FTDX-3000.I have the Tecsun PL-990x, which sounds absolutely horrible on SSB meaning ECSS is impossible, + like the 7300 the audio from the PL-990x “on SSB” is harsh on the ears and it seems to be related to DSP processing, can’t beat that analogue sound + the DSP portables have a distortion to audio on SSB which is not nice to listen to, The Tecsun PL-680 on the other hand sounds much better but best of all is the FT-891, it’s a really super radio, of course it’s not as portable as the 990x but the newer PL-330 actually sounds better than the PL-990x because the 4 Khz filter actually works, it doesn’t on the 990x,880 or S-8800 but the PL-330 still has that distortion on SSB. If your new review has not been Approved after several days you can assume that it was found to not be within the product review T's&C's shown below during screening. As you are doing this, the VFO will change to LSB or USB too. Leave the setting on the option that suits your needs.

Hirst, Mark (2021-03-02). "Guest Post: Mark's review of the Yaesu FT-891 as shortwave broadcast receiver". The SWLing Post . Retrieved 2022-08-10. Uncompromising Receiver Circuit Design Ensures Excellent Performance • Triple conversion with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450 MHz (SSB/CW/AM Although it is not documented, if you push the multi-function knob on a selected memory channel in the multi-line listing rather than using the M>V button, the selected memory is activated and the radio is left in memory channel mode displaying the memory tag. Disabling Transmit The FT-891 fully supports the ATAS-25 and ATAS-120A Active Tuning Antenna System (optional) allowing for plug and play field and mobile operation.

While we’re on the subject of manuals, I highly recommend purchasing a Nifty manual (link) for any radio you’ll take to the field. Interfacing with a computer? FT-891 USB Driver Virtual COM Port Driver (Windows 11/10)– Zipped version of the USB driver software It has all been said already but I wanted to add my own review on this radio. Having owned an 857D and still owning a 897D, the 891 is a step-up in terms of quality of RX, display readability and even transmit audio. Regarding the ability to operate down to 10.8 Volts on the supply rail, that seems to be unproven, but I know a ham locally with an FT891 so a real test is possible. Go to the Radio tab. Select Yaesu FT-891 for the Rig. Under CAT Control, set the Serial Port to the COM number of the Enhanced COM Port number you read in device manager. Set the baud rate to the same value as you set Menu 05-06 to (4800). Data Bits – Default, Stop Bits – Default, Handshake – Default. Force Control Lines should show blanks for DTR and RTS.

Uncompromising Receiver Circuit Design Ensures Excellent Performance • Triple conversion with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450 MHz (SSB/CW/AM Programming frustrations – It can be a challenge to program and customize the unit to your preferences, due to the small screen and some user interface quirks. Can get hot – When transmitting at more than 70 watts for a prolonged period of time, the radio tends to heat up quite a bit. In good conditions, I suspect there is little difference between the FT–891 and FT–817ND for general listening. The FT–817ND has produced some of my best recordings of Shortwave Radiogram. The newer radio however brings many advanced tools to bear on more difficult signals, while its band scope and full sized VFO tuning dial enable desktop style shortwave exploration.
