This is a bit contradictory to the monitor’s 800R screen curvature, which implies that for the ideal viewing experience, you shouldn’t sit more than 80cm (31.5″) away from the screen. This isn’t the Samsung Ark, where you can rotate the display fully vertical. Instead, you’re given a restrictive range of 20 degrees of swivel and tilt for minor adjustments, though thankfully, there’s a generous 4.3 inches of height adjustment. Jacob Roach / Digital Trends
For starters, it’s dim. Similar to the UltraGear OLED 27, this monitor tops out at around 200 nits of brightness. With a 3% window, LG claims up to 1,000 nits, but I only measured 780. Low brightness is typical of OLED, and although some may cry foul at a notion of a dimmer monitor, it was never too dim for me to work on during testing. Although that’s true on paper, I wouldn’t recommend the UltraGear OLED 45 for these types of games. With the 21:9 aspect ratio, massive size, and steep curve, playing a competitive title always felt wrong. There was always too much screen to take in everything at once, regardless of how great the motion clarity really is. However, it has a few kinks, such as the blurry text and fringing that gets magnified by the looser pixel density. Its 800r curve might be too steep for some, and it’s also prone to blurring like all OLED displays. It’s also expensive, but it has its merits, especially for those after true HDR gaming performance. Image Cleaning: Runs a complete image refresh cycle after four hours of use and only starts when you turn the monitor off or enter the power saving mode. It takes about 10 minutes to finish.
Moving on, the LG 45GR95QE monitor has gorgeous colors thanks to its wide 98.5% DCI-P3 gamut coverage (~135% sRGB relative size). There’s also an sRGB emulation mode, in case you prefer more accurate and natural colors for SDR content. But this monitor still looks extremely good, especially when compared to most other monitors. And it’s the fastest oled on the planet today. The LG 45GR95QE-B covers over 100% sRGB and 97% DCI-P3 for stunning color in games and movies. Its default color accuracy isn’t great, with a deltaE average of 2.91, but that’s common with wide-gamut displays. Its sRGB filter presented better results since the dE average dropped to 0.81.The UltraGear 27GR95QE-B features a 27-inch OLED (2,560 x 1440) display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and support for HDR. These specs, along with the 240Hz refresh rate, deliver a crisp picture quality that's buttery smooth. Surprisingly, the display isn’t exactly bright — but we'll get to that in a moment. As for the menu options themselves, it's pretty disappointing to see that LG has limited what you can do without the remote. The only options you can change with the power button menu are power, input, volume and brightness. That means, for example, that if you lose your remote you can't switch modes on this monitor, turn Adaptive Sync on or off, change languages, enable an FPS counter, etc. The first difference you will see with this monitor is its looser pixel density compared to the more common 34-inch specimens, such as the Alienware AW3423DW. Images may not look as sharp, but visibility and legibility are excellent, especially if you sit at the right distance from them. However, it’s not going to be great for document processing since the text looks fuzzy if you look close enough. The LG 45GR95QE-B boasts a 45-inch QD-OLED panel with a 3440 x 1440 resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time. Its typical brightness is set at 200 cd/m2, but it also has a 1000 cd/m2 peak. It’s not flexible like the Corsair Xeneon 45WQHD240, but it has an unusual 800r curve radius which feels a bit weird at first. When the UltraGear OLED 45 is operating at full tilt, there’s nothing like it. The gaming experience for cinematic titles is engrossing, and you won’t want to stop playing. Outside of that boundary, though, the display becomes a lot less practical.Assuming you crank up the brightness, there’s only one issue with the image quality: pixel density. This is a 44.5-inch display with a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440, leading to a pixel density of around 83 pixels per inch (PPI). That’s around the same level as a 27-inch 1080p monitor, and it’s a big reason why a display like the LG UltraGear OLED 48 is hard to justify. This short review is for the new 45” Ultragear. It is in my opinion the best gaming monitor on the planet for people who value size, speed, curve, and motion clarity over maximum image quality. Besides the standard image settings (brightness, contrast, color temperature, etc.), the LG 45GR95QE also offers 6-axis hue/saturation, color temperature fine-tuning in 500K increments, sharpness, four gamma presets, aspect ratio control, Auto Input Switch and Picture in Picture/Picture by Picture support. It isn't much brighter than the older firmware, 3.05, 1.13. It doesn't get bright enough to fight glare, but at least it maintains its brightness consistently across different scenes. These results are from after calibration in the 'Gamer 1' Game Mode, which is the name of the picture mode setting, with the Brightness at its max and Smart Energy Saving disabled. At a distance of roughly 41 inches (~104cm), the 3440×1440 resolution on a 44.5″ viewable screen becomes ‘retina’, meaning that you won’t be able to distinguish the individual pixels anyway. The LG 45GR95QE-B has a fantastic pixel response time, just like the LG 27GR95QE. OLED’s near-instant pixel response time and the 240Hz refresh rate eliminates blurring completely, so it’s very suitable for fast-paced play. You don’t need to use overdrive with it, even if you drop its refresh rate to 120Hz.
