About this deal

Of course, Bloodsport is far more than just a flimsy, low budget martial arts flick made 35 years ago. Still, it's hard to complain really as, for the most part, it looks pretty glorious for Van Damme's '88 breakthrough.

I thought the Kalifornia one was from Infinity and Capelight, but I confused that - it´s from Capelight only. There they used the matte finish with spot-gloss, that I like more than the coarse leather ones, they use for their UHD-releases. which is understandable - it more than gets the job done - but the Atmos upgrade is a fun alternative for those feeling a little more adventurous. Capelight Pictures, in association with ‎ Altitude Film Distribution, will bring to 4K Blu-ray Newt Arnold's cult film Bloodsport (1988), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb, Leah Ayres, Norman Burton, and Forest Whitaker. Dialogue remains well prioritised (even the obviously dubbed / ADR work), taking precedence where required, whilst effects enjoy the bustle of the Hong Kong streets, the car noises, crowds, splashing across boats, and - of course - the painful body blows that dominate the fight sequences and land with suitably engaging LFE impact. These all-new bonus features are entirely in English with optional German subtitles and can be found on both discs.

Skin tones are rich and healthy, black levels rich and inky yet not smothering all that fabulous shadow detail, and the 4K presentation takes years off this now 35 year old flick, leaving the pain, almost comedic facial expression of Van Damme and antagonist Bolo Yeung looking clearer than ever.

There's some backstory that nobody cares about, ridiculous romance with a reporter, and friendship with fellow fighters - whilst Army CID Agents are trying to bring him back in - but it's mostly just padding to get you to the next round. In his youth, American Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) was taught the art of ninjitsu by Japanese martial arts master Senzo Tanaka.

Along with a fabulous roster of extra features, there's only really one question - which version will you pick up? Found this to be a great release mainly for the book style and retro inspired art work the 4K restoration is not perfect but tbh it will never be due to its original quality but it still does not Impact the enjoyment of the movie and as everyone has stated one of jcvd’s best movies!Bloodsport is more than just the sum of its pretty flimsy parts, not only remaining a solid debut for Van Damme, with some spectacular martial arts action, but also the birth of MMA, UFA and even Mortal Kombat. When he finds out Tanaka is dying, Dux travels to Hong Kong in his honor to participate in the Kumite - a secret full-contact competition in which fighters from all over the world put their lives on the line. It's celebrated as inspiring not only the entire Mortal Kombat game and movie franchise, but also influencing and popularising what we now know of as mixed martial arts and UFC. Blu-ray edition, which squeezed both this film and Timecop on a dual-layered disc via the outdated VC-1 codec.

It was pretty-much all a slow path downhill from there but, unlike most all of his peers, Van Damme was still invested in even the trash he had to participate in - the result being he's made a surprising number of genuinely watchable DTV efforts. Hertzog's era-specific original score enjoys a much more substantial presence in the rear while not sounding overcooked. new 2160p/HDR transfer, Atmos and theatrical audio tracks, exclusive new extras, and a remastered Blu-ray. In his youth, American Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) was taught the art of ninjutsu by Japanese martial arts master Senzo Tanaka. Probably the most expensive ‘standard’ edition I’ve bought, but definitely my favourite Jean-Claude Van Damme film.Their Ultra HD Blu-ray delivers a frequently excellent 4K picture that's not without its limitations - partly the result of the original filming style. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I just know when I do it though, we'll get a nice version in the states from Shout or someone like that.
