The first novel from Quintin Jardine, this was originally published in 1993 and was to mark the beginning of the Bob Skinner series of books. Setting up the character, it presents him with his first case allowing him to develop letting the readers know what’s expected. It also helped him to develop his voice as well. Starting his career as a novelist of crime fiction focusing on the detective genre, he began as a writer in 1993 with the release of his first novel; ‘Skinner’s Rules’. This was to be the book that also started the Bob Skinner series, charting the exploits of its eponymous protagonist. It was was also the book that was to help establish his name setting up his reputation as well respected crime writer. After a tip-off, a man's body is exhumed from a shallow grave in Edinburgh. Murder surely, yet he died from natural causes, so, case closed? Indee... Born in 1945, the Scottish born author was brought up within the area of Motherwell, Lanarkshire, where he got his education both there and in the city of Glasgow. Studying law, he also had a penchant for snooker, something which helped to inform the man that he is today, along with his work. He tried his hand at a number of jobs after this, including journalist, media relations and even political spin-doctor. None seemed to capture his attention as he moved between places in an attempt to discover his true vocation in life. As ever I awaited the return of the most egotistical policeman, now media mogul, in fictional history and was I disappointed ? Love Quintin’s books and this was another great read which continued story from previous book.
