This is a charming picture book that follows the story of Erin Pike, a girl that longs to explore the sea but kept away from the dangerous 'black rock' that endangers local fishermen and women.The secret of black rock is not an uncommon incidence where the people would like to create the environment. At the moment, these are aimed more at KS2 children, however they are looking to organise activities for KS1 children, which hopefully will be out soon.

It's been a couple of years since I set myself a reading challenge/target/thingy, but I got into a bit of a reading slump late last year, and I decided I needed to shake things up a bit. While elements of the story are a familiar trope of kiddie lit, ROCK takes the concept and makes it its own. Each pack carefully analyses the vocabulary used by authors, chapter by chapter, then provides an explanation of these unfamiliar or meaning-rich words in context.
By providing a contextual explanation rather than just a standard definition, we can better help children understand the stories we are sharing with them and widen their vocabulary. I highly recommend everyone to read this book, either for yourself, for your kids, or have your kids read it. We are currently experiencing issues with uploading week 3's PowerPoint and hope to resolve this as soon as we can. My Experience: I started reading The Secret of Black Rock on 5/25/17 as a story time for my 5 year-old son and we finished it on the same day. This Year 1 / Year 2 resource linked to The Secret of Black Rock encourages your class to show what they understand from the first part of the book.
