Size: The most popular tumblers hold around 30 ounces, and among the friends and coworkers who use them daily, that was unanimously the preferred size for sipping cold beverages or ice water. Additionally, because the quality is not as high, any liquids you put into your tumbler may not be able to maintain the desired temperature for the same period of time. You might find that your hot drinks become lukewarm sooner than they might in a Yeti. Plus, ice will melt a lot faster in a Beast. While some people may be willing to put up with this, others may find that they are willing to pay those extra few dollars to get better quality. What Do Beasts and Yetis Have in Common? With those criteria in mind, we went on a journey of finding the very best options you can buy. For ease of use, the tumbler has a tapered end, meaning it fits into pretty much any regular cupholder. That also means that you can take it anywhere you go and always have somewhere to put it. Plus, as mentioned above, the cup doesn't sweat, so you won't get your hands or anything else wet in the process. It will not leave water stains on surfaces, and better yet, it won't water stain itself either. Value: After the testing period and taking into consideration any extra features, we rated each one on a scale from "not fairly priced" to "exceptionally well-priced."
What about the dishwasher, though? RTIC and Hydro Flask say that you should hand-wash only, while YETI specifically claims their tumblers will survive dishwashing. (Pelican doesn’t comment either way.) Given the number of outright contradictions we’ve seen over our years researching vacuum-insulated products, we’re not surprised by either answer. Extra-hot drying cycles will make the metal expand and contract, so there’s some risk to every mug, but the biggest problems are usually with color coatings and glued-on plastic pieces. When they say double insulated, they aren't kidding. You will find that any ice you put in your Yeti tumbler will last for an entire day, if not longer. Conversely, any hot drinks that you choose to put in your tumbler will remain hot until the last drop is gone. This says a lot about Yeti's reliability. I agree the smaller straw is smaller than, for example, a McDonald’s straw. However, we had no issues with drinking water, tea or coffee. There is a larger straw provided if you have trouble. So, the ideal setting for an insulated tumbler is on a hot afternoon where you want to keep your drink insulated, but you’re more worried about convenience more than spills. Drinking something cold poolside on a scorching-hot day is a perfect example. Reading on the patio in the early morning with a cup of coffee is also a case where the tumbler works better than an ordinary cup. The bottom line Vacuum-insulated cups, which are typically made of metal or glass, have both an inner and outer wall that is separated by a thin layer of vacuum. The outer walls have a reflective coating to keep heat inside the inner chambers; meanwhile, convention (how heat rises and cold sinks — causing the loss of heat) is prevented by the cup’s lid.
Our tester used these tumblers in place of his usual water bottle and coffee mug for two weeks. At work, around the house, in the car and at the park, they all kept beverages handy. The Yeti lid has a slab that slides shut and can come off, making it easy to wash. The Beast lid has a snap-shut lid that is slightly harder to remove. The slide-cover lid isn’t as good at sealing against leaks as YETI’s lid, though. It dribbles a small stream if you hold the cup upside down. If you really want to keep your drink in, the flip-up lid on the RTIC (or the old-style Pelican Snap Lid, which you can still buy in 2018) is a better choice.
