About this deal
This pedal at hand has two operating modes: HP and LP, both of which have a wide variety of highly accessible tones. There have been seven distinct versions of the OCD, identifiable by the PCBs and layout on the inside, alongside visual cues like the size of the logo on the front panel. You essentially get all of that lovely bluesy goodness with the addition of a ’fat’ toggle mode which ramps up the body and saturation to give you lovely full and rich crunch tones.
Mooer Hustle Drive | Overdrive Pedal | GAK
For me this is a tone that the Strymon Riverside does really well - giving it an added 80’s sheen through its digital processing. There’s an entirely other kind of delight in stomping on each of those separate boxes to ramp up or smooth out your playing tone. My choice here is an excellent mini Japanese pedal (sister company to Xotic) - the EWS Little Fuzzy Drive - this has two toggle option voicings - regular and fat - giving you a tremendous range of tones from such a small format. I had long considered the OneControl Golden Acorn Overdrive Special - which is still on my wishlist, but keeps being bumped by other more pressing / desirable choices.

All of those are truly great minis and stand up well against pretty much everything at this size, even against larger enclosure types. Many really love its rich and complex distortion character - including myself, while others prefer a slightly smoother type of distortion - which is why it's handy that there are so many clones and mods around - you can find your preferred derivation of the core flavour that best suits your preferences. After a while you get a handle for what your core setup baseline is, and what pedals are likely to work best - in terms of how they are voiced. The Simble for me wins out with its slightly fatter, bassier touch, it took a while for me to decide between The Dude and the Simble. Of the following list, the E-Lady (formerly Elec-Lady) is high on my wishlist, alongside Micro Drummer, Mod Factory, Pure Octave, Rumble Drive and Soul Shiver. This featured on my recent Dual Delay + Reverb pedals overview - as much as to have a mini pedal equivalent to be able to create ambient washes in a single pedal. It is essentially a high gain distortion sound with bass and treble dialled all the way up and mid tones dialled all the way down - AKA Scooped Mids. There is also the really high quality Japanese OneControl brand with its excellent Bjørn Juhl -designed minis, and LA-based Italian-made F-Pedals which both could do with more advertising really and more exposure.
