About this deal

Truth be told, taking care of your teeth can often be a chore. Many have turned to electric toothbrushes with supercharged motors to remove the – admittedly low – effort of the twice-daily routine, but in our eyes, the worst aspect of maintaining a healthy mouth is flossing. Grinding a bit of string between your gums is never an easy nor enjoyable task, but we've found one way to inject a tonne of fun into the process while also cranking up the efficiency, and that's with a water flosser. Yes, you might be rolling your eyes at having suffered through the same advice from your dentist as they espouse the values of flossing, but using a powered tool for the job is your gateway to a healthier, happier, cleaning set of gnashers. But even if you have a large countertop, you need to determine the location of your wall plug. Having a corded water flosser far away from a plug means you have long cords wrapped around your countertop, which isn’t ideal. Michele Bishop, DDS, founder and owner of Ingram Hills Dental in San Antonio, Texas, and the co-host of the YouTube Channel Tipsy Tooth Talk

The reservoir tank holds the water used while water flossing. The amount of water the tank can hold has a direct impact on how long you can floss without it being refilled. The flossers we tested had reservoirs ranging from 175mL to 600mL in size; we found that a tank size of 350mL or more can typically last for an entire flossing session, though the pressure setting and mode used can also affect the amount of water used. When it comes to separating good water flossers from great water flossers, pressure settings and reservoir size are important factors. While it only has three settings (fewer than some of the more expensive options on our list), they are effective and get the job done. The pulse mode, in particular, was one of our favorites—it did an excellent job getting gunk out from in between our teeth. Nozzle Heads: Water flosser nozzles can come with the standard jet tip head, but some models include a variety of heads to clean orthodontia and your tongue. Some water flossers also include a few heads, so multiple people can use the flosser but have their own nozzle.

That said, the majority of these studies have been small and there is no clear consensus on which approach is best. The dentists and hygienists we spoke to told us that water flossing isn’t a replacement for brushing and shouldn’t replace string flossing. Rather they suggest that water flossing is great for people with dexterity issues, orthodontic work and even periodontal disease — all of which can make string flossing or interdental brushing difficult, uncomfortable or painful. Barbour told us that her ideal scenario is for “every patient to [string] floss nightly and then use a water flosser as an adjunct to flossing.” Still, the total simplicity of blasting out gunky bits of food thanks to the oscillating head means the Spotlight earns its place on our list. Plus, we like that the nozzle is on the smaller side, which makes it a good choice for anyone with orthodontics (especially when you combine that with the fact that the oscillation might help a reluctant water flosser remove more plaque in a shorter period of time). It depends on your oral care needs. If you don't have issues with your teeth and gums, wear oral appliances, or struggle to use traditional string floss, a water flosser might be a luxury addition to your oral care routine. (Not to say it couldn't be worth it, just that you might not get as much use out of it.) But if preventing and removing more than the average amount of plaque is critical to your health, we think a water flosser is a solid investment. The unit features a large reservoir but is still compact, a rarity in countertop flossing units. It's downright sleek and is designed to look nice on your bathroom counter, in addition to being a solid water flosser.

The Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 3000 also comes with the quad stream nozzle, which covers a wider surface are and is a big selling point in the Philips Sonicare lineup of water flossers. You’ll also find the same two-year warranty and pulse wave technology. Finally, make sure you like the way the water flosser feels in your hand. Many of our testers noticed when a product was easy to hold or had an ergonomic, well-balanced handle, and since it can be awkward fitting the nozzle into the hard-to-reach places of your mouth, you need a flosser that maneuvers smoothly as you twist and turn it around. Go Beyond Brushing - 2 modes in 1 sleek, compact device. "Clean" mode flosses teeth were your toothbrush cannot reach, and "Massage" mode is designed to massage gums, boosting circulation and improving gum health. Aqua Flosser PRO comes with 2 micro jet-stream nozzles, 1 tongue scraper, and 1 periodontal tip. This clinical grade oral care device will provide your most confident smile ever. Water flossers come in a variety of sizes and price ranges, but their main differences are pretty straightforward: reservoir size, power source, and accessories. Interchangeable tips help you with various oral-hygiene-related tasks as well as letting you share the irrigator with family members. Most water flossers offer multiple pressure settings and modes. We found that most countertop flossers offer 10 different settings, while the portable options have just a handful. The average user will only need a few settings; however, there are few situations where you’ll want to ensure you are using a specific pressure option. If you have gingivitis, wear braces or aligners, or simply have trouble with the fine motor manipulation of weaving dental floss between your teeth, the best water flossers are extremely helpful tools, removing more bacteria-causing plaque than string floss alone. According to the experts we spoke to, they are a highly effective tool for maintaining oral health. The reservoir tank is where the water from the nozzle's pressurized stream comes from. When you fill up the tank, the water then flows either into a tube connected to the nozzle attachment or directly into the nozzle attachment itself (on cordless models). I’ve been using a water flosser for years to try to maintain clean teeth and healthy gums. As a health reporter, I’ve cycled through several brands and models over time—both corded and cordless—and have a good sense of how these products perform, as well as how far they’ve come in recent years. I combined my personal knowledge with interviews I conducted on which features are helpful in a water flosser with Leena Palomo , D.D.S., board-certified periodontist at NYU Dentistry; Julie Cho , D.M.D., board-certified dentist in New York City; Mia L.
