About this deal

The good news is that it is proper HD, a fairly decent transfer with good detail and with no signs of compression. The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new UHD restoration of the classic cult shocker. This is why, when I hear reports about recent outbreaks of teenage violence and crimes, I cannot easily judge or dismiss them.

Compared to the previous Anchor Bay Blu-ray release—which often looked washed out, with grayed blacks, and excessive DNR and edge enhancement—the improvement in image detail is absolutely tremendous. There’s no sign of compression or the like, and the odd soft looking scene seems to be an issue with the original source. There’s a shot about 53 minutes into the film in which one of the girls is crossing a cement battlement at sunset. And finally, the new Blu-ray release gives the film the uplift to HD that the original Blu-ray release missed out on.

I do feel that its strongest impact is with audiences closer to the age of its protagonists, but it is still a watchable piece of entertainment. As you know, this film has been banned in multiple countries and is not well-appreciated in its own. Watching it again now, and having lost that rebellious adolescent fascination I once held for the first film, I can only see Battle Royale II: Requiem as simply a bad film. Disc Two, meanwhile, presents the Special Edition Director’s Cut (122:01) which runs about 8 minutes longer.

Increasingly it feels like we’re living in a world where someone would think Battle Royale would be a good idea. Battle Royale Special Edition has the same audio options, but the surround track seems to have been reworked for the SE, a little more immersive in the sound design, and a lot more LFE oriented when it comes to explosions and action. Doesn't really make much difference, it just sticks out like a sore thumb when the rest of the film has been polished to such a shine.

I must have been in a good mood the first time I reviewed Battle Royale II: Requiem, either that, or coming off the back of the first film, I was looking for anything that could match its controversial impact.
