About this deal

From the very first day of life, Song recommends getting babies used to tummy time, which they will continue until they start crawling and sitting around 6 months old — give or take. Why we love it: This is one of those toys where a picture doesn’t tell the whole story: the mummy elephant cushion is super-snuggly (our baby tester fell asleep on it), not too squidgy and very large – the largest in our list.

It supports posture development; provides appropriate and helpful sensory input that helps babies learn colors, texture, and their orientation in space (proprioception); encourages the development of skills for crawling and sitting; lengthens and stretches the trunk; and prevents flat spots on the head (plagiocephaly) due to lying on the back too much. Plus, as safety is our number one priority, you won’t find any nasty hinges, no hard wood or glass, and no fabric that can get all dirty and full of germs because we want learning to be the best and most positive experience possible for both you and your child! As babies learn to control their little hands to grasp and touch, simply flip the mirror face down for a brand new toy! For babies who cry in protest every time they’re placed belly-down, propping a safe mirror in front of her (more on mirror safety below) may catch and hold her interest for tear-free tummy time.

But, once your baby's happy to lie on their front on the floor with a playmat for a while (certainly by about 3 to 4 months old), you can start to introduce toys that are specially designed to make tummy time fun and stimulating. Please note: remember to put your baby on their back for sleep safety - never sleep your baby on their tummy or side. Information contained in the handouts is updated regularly and therefore you should always check you are referring to the most recent version of the handout. As we mentioned, around age 20 months it will dawn on your little one that the child looking back at her in the mirror is actually herself. The material is lightweight (our medium size is less than 3kg and our large size is under 5kg) so it’s easy to roll up and move around.

In the beginning, your baby may not enjoy tummy time very much and may only tolerate a minute or two. To avoid any accidents, make sure your play mat is dry again before you let your little one crawl or play on it. The onus is on you, the user, to ensure that you have downloaded the most up-to-date version of a consumer health information handout. Chevron icon It indicates an expandable section or menu, or sometimes previous / next navigation options. We don’t recommend baby wipes, abrasive cleaning products or applying too much pressure as this will damage your mat. This is a toy that will grow with them from belly time, where both the babies and their siblings can push the pins around, to when they are crawling and walking later. But what they can do is enjoy the early benefits of reading, whether it's looking at high contrast images in this tummy time book, or hearing the necessary rhythm and cadence of their parents reading a book to them. But this doesn't have to be the case, and a few times per day, it shouldn't be, as babies get the opportunity to grow and develop their mind and body through tummy time. This is like going to an aquarium and walking over one of those terrifying clear bridges, where you can see sharks swimming below you, but for babies.

Direct sunlight or warm temperatures can cause the pattern to fade so make sure you always bring it back inside after use and gently wipe it down (more cleaning tips here).Use some of the tips listed on this page to make tummy time more enjoyable and a little easier for them. It’s quite solidly stuffed, so may better suit a baby who’s not a tummy-time novice and is already well used to a bit of prone play.

To encourage this, a tummy time mat that makes noise when your baby kicks the music buttons is the perfect way to encourage them to keep on kicking.

We know how important safety is for your little one so our award-winning luxe play mats are made from PU (polyurethane), a non-toxic material that is not only durable and hard wearing but easy to clean. It will motivate them to lift that little neck for longer as their visual tracking skills improve and their facial expressions expand. Your play mat is carefully rolled up and protected in a recyclable brown box until it reaches its final destination. The colours are bright and, in the opened-out tummy-time position, your baby can see that lovely, smiley caterpillar face. Babies with big heads or those who were born early often find tummy time more difficult and may need more time to improve at it.
