About this deal

Die Spieldauer ist optimal für Kinder und das gemeinsame Gewinnen und Verlieren spornt zu weiteren Partien an. It’s also cooperative, so when another player “asks for help” (uses a card from your hand) to stop a goblin, it’s no big deal. Having a 3-year-old and a 3 year age gap between our kids always makes it a truly remarkable experience when we find a game that legitimately works for all of us. I understand it’s a kid’s game and luck is usually part of that, but I think this needs a little more balance. Both my three-year-old and my six-year-old enjoyed the game immensely (and keep asking to play again and again, which is always a great sign).

Each player starts the game with a single face-up card and three monsters waiting for them along the path to the castle. My First Castle Panic is a cooperative tower (castle) defense game for 1-4 players ages 4+ that plays in just 20 minutes. What this game does so well is teach children to cooperate together to try and win, by sharing cards and thoughts about which monsters should take priority and in doing so it teaches some really basic elements of strategy. And there are special cards you can draw that rebuild your wall or send a goblin flying back to the draw pile. The goblins move one step closer to your castle each turn, and you have cards in your hand to get rid of them and send them to the dungeon. however, I think I inadvertently taught my daughter how to quarterback a cooperative board game (oops). As a cooperative experience, I could even quarterback a little and explain why I was making recommendations, and my kids would pick it up. You play the game with your cards face-up, so kids can see everyone’s hand (and you can give them a little help if needed).

Have Justin De Witt and the Fireside Games crew struck the right balance between simple rules and engaging game play? Maybe some house rules, like everyone starting with one of the special boot cards (which allow you to remove anyone from the board and put them back into the bad guy stack) could help provide more strategy and prevent the awful luck that can plague games like this. To use a card to defeat a monster, the card must have a matching color and shape to a space with a monster on it.

Now that my kids are starting to finally reach the age where games with them are actually interesting (please no more memory games), I’m still always on the lookout for new experiences with them.On their turn each player draws a card, plays a card OR asks for help, moves the monsters, and draws another monster token. Players must work together to defend their castle, in the center of the board, from monsters that attack out of the forest at the edges of the board. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Playing Castle Panic (a fantastic game) with my 4-year-old felt more like giving instructions to an unwilling robot. My daughter promptly told me that no, we need to capture the monster closest to the castle and that I was going to do that.
