STUDY the biblical story of Ruth. Briefly explain that Ruth was a young woman who loved her new husband’s mother, Naomi, who loved the Lord. After her husband died, Ruth left her own family andthefalse religions of her homeland to make a new family with Naomi and to worship the true God. Unlike Sal, who dangerously ventured away from her mother and met danger, Ruth promised to always stay with Naomi and eventually met Boaz and became thegreat grandmother of David. Let the kids try all of their ideas. Some kids will of course run straight to blueberries and a metal pail, but others might have really creative ideas. Plourde, Lynn (1998). One key factor to consider when growing your own blueberry plants is that we recommend growing 2 varieties close together, this allows the plant to grow large fruit through cross-pollination. Growing blueberries is not as difficult as one may think. All you need are blueberry bushes that suit your climate, prepare the soil with the proper pH and you will have home grown, antioxidant rich berries all summer long. For deliveries the size of ours, this just doesn't make sense for us or for our international customers, and so we have made the difficult - but necessary - decision to stop selling our plants internationally. We do very much hope that this will be a temporary measure and look forward to resuming trading internationally in the future. Delivery Information One of the tastiest activities for Blueberries for Sal is to make a blueberry treat. At the end of the story, Sal and her mother can all of the fresh blueberries so they will be able to enjoy them over the winter.

I would probably recommend this book only with a caveat: I don't think it's suitable for kids who live in areas where there are actual bears; it could easily give them the wrong idea. In 1940, he married Peggy Durand, daughter of the children's writer Ruth Sawyer. They had two daughters, Sally and Jane, and settled in New York State, spending summers on Scott Island, a small island off Little Deer Isle in East Penobscot Bay. McCloskey's wife and eldest daughter Sally are reputed to be the models for little Sal and her mother in Blueberries for Sal (1948), a picture book set on a "Blueberry Hill" in the vicinity. Three others of his picture books are set on the coast and concern the sea. Blueberries for Sal is a Caldecott Honor Book that was written in 1948. Life has changed quite a bit in the last 70+ years, but this story has stood the test of time. It’s possible to lower the pH levels of your soil with sulphur chips or dust. However, they’ll need to be added three weeks before planting to take effect. If the soil is not well draining, each planting hole should be prepared by filling it with a mixture of soil and coarse grit.

In a thriller, the hero and the opponent are a good, even match for each other. (In horror, the villain is supernatural, and far more powerful.) In Blueberries For Sal, the mother bear is clearly far more dangerous to Sal than Sal is to the bear, so should we call this horror? No, because McCloskey gets round the serious disparity in dangerousness. The bear has lost her cub, just as Sal’s mother has lost Sal. McCloskey has created the illusion of equal opposition. When applied to thrillers, this technique — of showing the villain as basically the evil flipside of the character — is often called Shadow In The Hero.

Spanish Is the Language of My Family

I hope Sal and her family make the most of that blueberry jam because I doubt that mother will be returning next year to collect more berries. Then again, she didn’t seem all that bothered. That afternoon Matthew and Joshua, already book lovers, were happy to oblige their little brothers’ request. I stayed in the kitchen that day when the older boys got home from school. But I could easily hear them talking. “Matthew,” said Nathan, “read how Sal takes berries from her mom’s pail.” TALK ABOUT when Blueberries for Salwas written andhow different 1948 wasfromtoday. Not only in the way they dressed, what they ate, and how they preserved their food, but also in the kind of dangers they faced. While many people who lived 70 years ago were more likely to face natural dangers–such as meeting wild animals–they were much less likely to face stranger danger. Discuss how you would never ask your child to go “run along” and walk alone in a public mall and why. Bible

Sal isn’t that interested in collecting the blueberries for jam. That’s her mother’s concern. Sal, like all children that age, is living in the moment, led by an innate interest in sensory sensations, enjoying the fruit. (Two for me; one for the pail. Relatable.) OPPONENTOne way to get started with is activity is to bring along a few different containers and go on a nature walk. Once kids start observing their surroundings I bet they can find a few things that make very similar sounds. The entire story takes place on a hill in the wilderness of America. Readers who know about the author and how he made it will easily place the story in Maine, as will readers familiar with the sequel, which overtly states the stories of Sal and her mother take place in Maine: err, One Morning in Maine.
