About this deal

I think the soles are not far from being the same as some Hoka shoes and boots. (Hoka is well known for deeper soles and high levels of cushioning.) The laces are a good length, nice to use and strong. They adjust the boots to fit the foot well with the laces running through holes with one pair of hooks at the top. So it’s easy to loosen the boots when putting them on and taking them off. Gaiters I don’t think I’ve yet come across a shoe I can comfortably wear as long as these, 10 hours of walking, over a variety of terrains and my feet still felt fresh. Fans of the inov-8 TRAILFLY™ Ultra G 300 Max Trail Running shoes will be delighted with the new inov-8 ROCFLY™ G 390 as it features the same GRAPHENE-GRIP™, G-FLY™, ADAPTER-FLEX™ technologies and an identical underfoot design.

There is so much to love about the inov-8 ROCFLY™ G 390 and I have enjoyed wearing them for a huge variety of hikes, on a multitude of surfaces and over both long and short distances. So, If cushioning and comfort are high on your list of priorities, then the ROCFLY™ should be high on your list of potential hiking shoes. I find that the insoles in lightweight footwear only last a few hundred miles before they start becoming thin and uncomfortable. So I usually change them for Superfeet insoles but not so with the Inov-8 RocFly G 390 boots insoles. They still feel comfortable and still look to be in pretty good condition after about 350 miles. RocFly G 390 insole after about 350 miles Breathability and Waterproofing At first glance the boots shows a mixture of robustness, flexibility and adaptability to the foot completelly similar to the TRAILFLY ULTRA G 300 MAX as it seems they use the smae chasis. For the moment, what the brand ensures in relation to the use of graphene: greater durability, greater energy return and adaptability to the terrain without losing properties over kilometers and time. If you already have a hiking boot, running shoe, or training shoe that fits you well, you could measure the length of the shoe’s insole and match this with the size guide. All of that is to say -- the prospect of the ROCFLY G 390 was interesting. Inov-8 described it as a shoe built for putting in long miles day after day, and even though it looked like a burly shoe, the relatively light weight and 6mm drop felt like the kind of specs that could really work for a long distance shoe. I, like many thru hikers (95% of whom seem to wear Altra Lone Peaks), tend to take a little bit of pride in only wearing trail runners, but the ROCFLY G 390 seemed to have enough trail runner characteristics that I wouldn’t totally feel like I was switching sides. Plus, it felt like it could be the responsible choice if I wanted to keep my feet and ankles happy for future adventures. I was excited to give them a try.

The boots look lovely. It’s always a bonus when a walking boot or shoe looks attractive. It would be good to see a couple of other colour choices for women. By infusing it into their G-FLY™ foam, inov-8 is promising a revolutionary underfoot experience that allows hikers to feel fresher for longer. From time to time carriers may deliver earlier or later, or on non working days however this is cannot be guaranteed nor should it be expected.

These fitted comfortably from the outset with plenty of cushioning all round the foot. The lacing can be adjusted nicely to hold your foot in place, especially good for walking on rough and steep ground. There is a perfect amount of space in the toe box so that my toes were never squashed together as my feet swell on long distance walks. I didn’t have a single issue with my feet during the 2 weeks walking the Cape Wrath Trail. Inov-8 RocFly G 390 boots We’d recommend looking at the size guide which shows the approximate length of each size’s midsole in centimetres. Overall: B+ (Overall a great lightweight hiking boot with added protection over a trail running shoe.)

Vertical grooves cut into the rubber allow the foot’s metatarsal bones to move more independently, aiding adaptability and flexible grip when hiking over uneven terrain I’ve thought about this for quite a while because I try to be fair and just because the boots suit me, doesn’t mean they’re right for someone else. But I have really struggled to find anything I don’t like about these boots. The only slight negative I can find with the Rocfly G 390 boots is the heal break on the sole. I like the sharper more emphasised heal on the Roclite Pro G 400 V2 boots. I think they grip better when descending on ‘very’ steep wet ground when you need to cut the heel in. This is a pretty minor complaint really because I think the RocFly G 390 boots heal grips really well in all other conditions. And I may be unfair to the boots for even mentioning it because all sole designs are a compromise. They are probably designed like this to gain comfort or grip elsewhere. Conclusion As inov-8 suggest, these hiking boots feel like trail running shoes but with the support and stability of a boot. The ankle cuff is comfortable but not overly stiff. The sole feels agile and flexible. This means the boot has a great balance of flex but with adequate support. Compatability The lower the number on the scale, the narrower the fit, which ensures minimal internal movement of the foot when running fast on technical terrain. Shoes with the higher numbers on the scale will suit athletes with a wider foot and those wanting that extra comfort in the toe box. This wider toe box allows the toes to splay for increased stability when lifting heavy weights. It's also perfect for longer runs and races when toes begin to swell. The 37-year-old scaled the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) – plus all the miles in between them – on a 500-mile adventure that took him just 16 days, 15 hours and 39 minutes.

Vertical grooves cut into the rubber allow the foot’s metatarsal bones to move more independently, aiding adaptability and flexible grip when hiking over uneven terrain. Hiking in the ROCFLY G 390 in some ways felt luxurious. I’m not sure I’ve ever worn a hiking shoe -- trail runner or boot -- that was at once bouncy, flexible, supportive, and grippy. (And all at a relatively light weight, too!) The way the midsole and the outsole work together make for a really distinct ride that makes you want to just keep walking and walking. The wear on my Inov-8 Roclite G 345 GTX boots after walking 1200 miles on my Lands End to John O’Groats and 3-Peaks challenge. You can read my review of the Inov-8 Roclite G 345 GTX boots here. RocFly G 390 boots sole wear after about 350 miles The ride is clearly ideal for not only for any day hike but for many day treks and for that matter uses where you are standing on your feet all day. And recall, it took James Forrest to that incredible 500 mile off roads record across the most rugged parts of the UK in less than 16 days. I can see how! I occasionally use a mini-gaiter if I’m likely to be on particularly boggy or gritty ground. These stop the mud and grit getting in the top of the boots. The strap under the gaiter fitted nicely into the groove in the sole of the RocFly boots, meaning it’s protected from wear. I’ve not used full gaiters with the boots but they should fit ok. Inov-8 are well respected in making lightweight running footwear and many people have found these good for hiking in as well. So Inov-8 have reacted to this demand by adding specialist hiking footwear to their range. The boots are lightweight and immediately comfortable. I agree with inov-8’s claim that the boots fit and feel like trail running shoes. I felt like I had a spring in my step when walking in the boots. I am not sure that the Graphene-infused G-FLY™ foam “supercharged” my feet, but certainly these are very comfortable boots with good cushioning.
