About this deal

The way that Powell navigates heartache, depression, anxiety, and just not really knowing what your next step in life is, is truly exceptional. The lives of Rafiq’s three children becoming increasingly dependent on their relationship to money:Siver, the only daughter, escapes into an unhappy marriage in Baghdad before fleeing to raise her daughter as a single mother in Dubai.

The storyline is well-crafted, the characters engaging and the level of detail brings every scene to life. This book seemed to be everywhere in 2022 and was recommended in many of the lists produced at the end of the year. Windows users should also consider upgrading to Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, or switching to Firefox or Chrome. The subtle observations described in such intricate detail mean that this is a fly on the wall story like no other. Each chapter has a meal (or drink, lots of drinks) and Claire Powell's writing and characters are funny and heartbreaking and moreish . Family dynamics move continually and this novel shows a particularly intense period of shifting loyalties.

What sets At the Table apart is Powell's acute understanding not just of how we interact in the modern world. Set over the course of one year, “At The Table” tells the story of the Maguire family, parents Gerry and Linda and their adult children Nicole and Jamie. Her short fiction has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and in 2017 she won the Harper's Bazaar short story contest. We follow each of the equally flawed characters over the course of the year after the announcement and see how it affects them all. To watch a character to begin to suffer with depression and anxiety is tough, but when no one in the book seems to notice his mental health deteriorating is incredible hard. I really enjoyed this book and it was exactly what I needed, an easy read / a good gripping distraction.
