Used heavily amongst California tribal people for centuries (and still in use today), this plant has many names given by the tribes who use it. Powdery mildew is a common problem for many of us. It is easy to recognize by the white blotches covering the leaves of your plants. Powdery mildew is fungal spores which travel via the air, making it contagious.

There are a variety of sages including pineapple sage, blue sage, and scarlet sage. There’s even a variety called Death Valley Sage ( Salvia funereal). White Sage can assist you in releasing energies and thought forms from yourself or another that no longer serves you.

If you notice yellow or white spots on the top of leaves, or orange spots on the bottom, don’t worry – it could just be rust, a fungal disease that’s easy to manage.

While it is easiest and most common to bundle the leaves and stems together and dry them for this purpose, they can also be burned individually. Crumbled or powdered leaves can be burned as powdered incense too. Sage tea is often drunk in conjunction with other therapies to soothe joint pain, colds, sprains, and kidney and liver troubles. Keep the air as still as possible when you smudge. No fans, or open doors and windows while the Sage is burning.
