About this deal

If Only They Could Talk" is the first of a series of books that are essentially memoirs of Herriot's experiences as a young veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales, beginning in the 1930s. It is a heartwarming and humorous account of his encounters with animals and their owners, as well as his struggles to establish himself as a veterinarian in a rural community. Herriot arrives to Yorkshire Dales looking for a job as Veterinary Surgeon Assistant with the veterinarian Siegfried Farnon. If only they could talk” is the first of many books that follow the same historical line in James Herriot’s life. Like “If Only They Could Talk” (1970) , It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet (1972) , Let Sleeping Vets Lie (1973), Vet in Harness (1974), Vets Might Fly (1976) ,Vet in a Spin (1977), James Herriot's Yorkshire (1979), The Lord God Made Them All (1981), Every Living Thing (1992), James Herriot's Cat Stories (1994), and James Herriot's Favourite Dog Stories (1995).

He was starting to meet people in town. The job routine was difficult but he was getting accustomed to. Nothing on the masterpiece of words, the thought out plot, the detail that Orwell describes extensively, not even mentioning the main characters. Or the ending.... On the other hand, archaeologists Terry Hunt of the University of Hawaii and Carl Lipo of California State University Long Beach have a more positive view of the island’s history. They suggest that the inhabitants actually pioneered a type of sustainable farming – they built thousands of circular stone walls, called manavai, and grew food inside them. And their theory about how the moai were moved is that they were ‘walked’ along using a system of only ropes and a few people.Fresh out of Veterinary College, and shoulder-deep in an uncooperative cow, James Herriot’s first job is not panning out exactly as expected . . .

James treats the Bellerbys’ cow and waits while they have Sunday lunch before giving them a lift into Darrowby to see Handel’s Messiah. The statues walked, Easter Islanders say. Archaeologists are still trying to figure out how – and whether their story is a cautionary tale of environmental disaster or a celebration of human ingenuity. Tristan has a more positive attitude to the pigs than in the series, being interested in their individual characters. When trying to catch the pigs, he lets out Siegfried’s mare. To be honest, I was quite disappointed by this book. He talks way too much (in my opinion) about the weather, the ongoing discussions between his boss and his brother, their secretary and the animal owners instead of going into more details about treating the animals and the animals themselves, it's all quite superficial to me. I even struggled to finish this book.If only they could talk’ undoubtedly is at its pinnacle when it comes to the descriptions of the landscape in which the book is set and is among one of the best countryside books I have ever read. These wonderful tales with their morsels of emotions like elation, sorrow, and humiliation all flamboyantly honeyed with humor can delight both the general reader and lovers of animal stories. The first Polynesians arrived at Rapa Nui (Easter Island), probably by canoe, hundreds of years ago. The island is 2,150 miles west of South America and 1,300 miles east of its nearest inhabited neighbour, Pitcairn. Nowadays 12 flights arrive every week from Chile, Peru and Tahiti. In 2011, 50,000 tourists – ten times the island’s population – flew to Easter Island. Almost all of the jobs on Easter Island depend on tourism. And the tourists go there for only one thing: the moai. Mr. Soames, the unpleasant horseman of Chapter 5, loses his job. Tristan makes a prank phonecall and James retaliates. This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition of If Only They Could Talk features an afterword by Yorkshire Shepherdess and author Amanda Owen. Siegfried asks for help with the dog to another famous vet in town Mr. Grier. Mr. Grier was known for being one of the roughest veterinarian teachers in town.
