The pièce de résistance is the included GoPro-style mounting plate that lets you mount the Braven Ready Solo to just about anything –which is a huge benefit for those of us who have heavily invested in GoPro accessories. A wireless Bluetooth speaker that delivers rich audio, high-quality voice calls, and high-res music while being fully ruggedized. Annoyingly, however, the mounting plate requires the removal of two hex screws. We wish Braven created a tool-less mounting solution but the decision to use hex screws does offer a solid mounting solution that should stand up to the abuses of the outdoors. (For example, you won’t have to worry about the Ready Solo flying off your ATV if you mount it on the handlebars.) Performance On the right panel, there's a battery status LED and a covered connection panel that includes a 3.5mm mic input for sing-alongs, a 3.5mm aux input, and a USB port for charging mobile devices using the speaker's battery—no cables are included for these connections, however. There's also a pinhole reset button and a connection for the included power supply. The speakers supports Bluetooth 5.0 and AAC/SBC codecs, but not AptX. The newest edition to the Braven speaker line (as of summer 2020) is the Braven BRV-XXL/2 large portable wireless speaker. This model is notable for its battery life. The speaker can run at 50% volume for about 18 hours. The BRV XXL/2 also has a 100-foot Bluetooth range and is, of course, IPX5 water-resistant, meaning it can withstand low-pressure water spray. The BRV XXL/2 is, according to Braven, 40% more powerful and 20% louder than the previous BRV-XL model. This means it is optimized to transmit audio through large outdoor spaces.

Conclusions

One thing about the BRV-X/2: It sounds markedly different depending on where you are in relation to it. Some angles and distances seem to bring out the bass depth a little more, but generally speaking, we've heard somewhat stronger bass depth from portable speakers before. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but the BRV-X/2 is more about its tough build and less about an over-the-top audio performance. The speakerphone mic offers decent intelligibility. Using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 8, we could understand every word we recorded, but the mic can sound distant even at close ranges, and there's the typical Bluetooth distortion fuzzing up the edges of words. This is par for the course with Bluetooth speaker mics, however—the mic should be fine for calls that have solid connections. Conclusions When it comes to clarity, the mids are just a tad squelched in higher registers, and there’s not a lot of sparkle at the top. But that’s in comparison to much more expensive and non-weatherproofed speakers, as well as the ideal. I’d have no trouble listening to these around the pool, at the beach, or at the campground (not in the deep woods, thank you; that’s where people go to get away from this stuff). Conclusion
