About this deal

Raspberry leaf is frequently used during pregnancy and labour to strengthen and tone the uterus, theoretically assisting contractions and preventing haemorrhage [ 10, 11]. While there is a long history of raspberry leaf use in pregnancy there is little research contributing to the evidence base especially in relation to its mechanism of action [ 12, 13], efficacy or potential harmful effects [ 11]. One review of scientific literature exploring raspberry leaf use in pregnancy [ 14] (now more than 10years old) concluded that there was not enough evidence to recommend its use in this context. The use of herbs in pregnancy can be a part of Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) which is defined by the National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health as a health care approach outside of mainstream Western or conventional medicine [ 5]. Large surveys in Australia found between 52 and 73% of pregnant women were using CIM and 37 to 48% consulted a CIM practitioner (for example a naturopath or herbalist) through their pregnancy [ 6, 7]. Raspberry leaf ( Rubus idaeus of the Rosacea family) was found to be one of the top five herbs being used by pregnant women and being prescribed by CIM practitioners. Forster, et al. [ 8] identified that 36% of women attending a public antenatal clinic in Melbourne Australia took at least one herbal supplement during pregnancy, with the most common being raspberry leaf (14%). Mollart, et al. [ 9] found that 52.5% of a group of Australian midwives ( n=571) recommended raspberry leaf to women experiencing a post-dates pregnancy and incidentally, it was also the most frequently used CIM strategy in their own pregnancies. However, a scientific study found no effects, neither harmful nor beneficial. Potential Risks of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea Bowman, R., et al. (2021). Biophysical effects, safety, and efficacy of raspberry leaf use in pregnancy: A systematic integrative review.

A small 2015 study found that red raspberry leaf extract helped reduce pain symptoms and ulcers by the end of the trial. Additionally, oral symptoms improved, and the researchers did not observe any adverse effects. This suggests that red raspberry leaf may be beneficial in treating symptoms of oral lichen planus. Other benefits I recommend tea as a method to incorporate herbs to my clients with PCOS because it is an enjoyable, simple addition anyone can add to a healthy lifestyle. Making a cup of tea can be a meditative practice. I always have a cup of herbal tea with me when I am working or relaxing. It is a small but powerful act of self-care and an opportunity to slow down and be grateful. There is some evidence to show that drinking red raspberry leaf tea may allow for a labor with fewer complications. International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research: “HERBS IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION: A REVIEW APPRAISAL” Serious heart symptoms include fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness;

However, taking raspberry leaf earlier on in your pregnancy may help prime your womb (uterus) to make labour easier. This is because it’s thought to tone the muscles of your womb (uterine muscles) so they work more efficiently when you're in labour. But the evidence isn’t strong and it's not suitable for pregnant women with health complications, like high blood pressure or if you’re expecting a breech birth. You also shouldn't take it too close to your due date. How does raspberry leaf tea help with labour?Raspberry leaf is a herbal remedy that can be taken as capsules or tea, not to be confused with raspberry fruit tea. Many herbalists believe that taking raspberry leaf during your last trimester tones your womb muscles ready for when labour comes. The idea is that this will then help labour progress at a nice, steady pace. Raspberry leaf tea can be enjoyed at any time in your cycle, but especially in the days leading up to and during your period.This way it can help to relieve some PMS symptoms, such as cramping. It can also help combat the iron lost from bleeding. However, modern scientific research into these claims has not confirmed health benefits to red raspberry leaf tea, and warns that the herb may even be harmful in some cases. Many studies were conducted using animals and need to be researched further. Nutrition Information
