There's a large Gruffalo-themed cafe for visitors to rest weary legs. And handily for parents, there's also a mini adventure playground outside to keep youngsters entertained at this pit stop too. There's a zoo not far from Manchester that boasts a magical deep dark wood inspired by the Gruffalo. Twycross Zoo in the Midlands has long been known as the home of hundreds of wild animals from across the world and popular for family days out. As you venture through, there are also the live animal enclosures to explore - including the large snake tanks that will get plenty of oohs from little visitors.

The zoo is showcasing the fascinating stories and traditions of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a holiday which originated in Mexico, with some added wonders from the natural world. Visitors are invited to take a stroll through the deep dark wood - which is accessed just through the main entrance to the zoo. You soon have your first meeting with the Gruffalo - which is the perfect opportunity for family photos. Leicester Square (Northern, Piccadilly), Charing Cross (Northern, Bakerloo), Embankment (District, Circle) Visitors can walk through a huge Gibbon forest, as well as feed the lorikeets in a large walk-through enclosure. As well as all the animal attractions, there are also huge indoor and outdoor play areas for kids to enjoy whatever the weather. Outside there's a large play park close the Gibbon Forest with a range of play equipment including adventure trail, slides and climbing frames.There's a special ‘October Fiesta’ taking place during half term holidays at the zoo. Inspired by the Mexican celebration Dia de Los Muertos, on selected dates until Sunday 5 November.

Animal lovers can head to conservation way to join the daily dream walk, which features awe-inspiring stilt performers and an installation inspired by a dream catcher – where budding conservationists of all ages can share and write their dreams for the natural world. For little animal lovers, there will be a fun-filled, free-of-charge, arts and crafts station where children can create their very own colourful parrot masks. There's also a Gruffalo theatre with special performances at weekends. There's even a Gruffalo cafe to take a break from all those stories of owl ice cream and scrambled snake. But last year it added a four acre woodland experience that's home to all of the much-loved creatures from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's iconic Gruffalo books. The Gruffalo Discovery Land is an accesible trail through a woodland that allows families to explore the story in an inventive new way. Twycross is home to hundreds of animals across 80 species, and is the only UK zoo that is home to the four great apes - chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos.
