After initially receiving a cold and hostile reception from Tom, Willie--an illiterate, shy child who has endured a horrific childhood--soon brings out his caring paternal side, which had sadly disappeared many years earlier.

Set in a small English town at the start of WWII, GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM stars John Thaw as Tom Oakley, who gets stuck with a shy young orphan named Willie Beech when the children of London are evacuated and sent to rural towns in preparation for the expected German bombings. John Thaw (Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC) stars as the widowed and cantankerous Tom Oakley in this charming film adaptation of the prize-winning children's novel by Michelle Mogorian. When the Second World War is declared, Tom finds that his quiet life in the village of Little Weirwold is set to change when nine-year-old Willie Beech (Nick Robinson) is evacuated from London and billeted on him. Tom explains a bad dream that Willie has repeatedly been having regarding this exact event, and argues that he needs to be with someone who loves him.

Tom has become reclusive after losing his wife and child to scarlet fever many years before, while Willie is a quiet young boy who comes from an abusive home and is apprehensive of Tom. In the film's final scene, Willie rides the bicycle down the long hill and stops just in front of an impressed Tom, whom he addresses as "Dad" for the first time. The outbreak of the Second World War sees nine-year-old Willie Beech (Nick Robinson) evacuated from London and billeted with crotchety widower Tom Oakley (Thaw) in the village of Little Weirwold.
